How to Choose a School for Your Kids

How you think about education is very important in making decisions about where you send your kids to school.

One problem is when we, as parents, choose schools, whether it’s grade school or a college, only based on ‘what’ they are to learn…like specific subjects or a college major.

Schools (especially colleges) have sold themselves for years based on ‘what’ but that’s only one part of the equation.

When we (Glenny's) decide where to send our kids to school, we think about 'who' in addition to 'what.’

Here is what we mean by that… Knowledge is everywhere, but wisdom is not.

You can get knowledge anywhere. With one search on the internet, you can find answers to most questions.

But, what about character? What about wisdom?

Character and wisdom are found in the 'who.’

Who are they going to learn from?

We love the original meaning of ‘college.’ Christopher Perrin writes, “The word college comes from the Latin collegere, ‘to gather, collect, assemble, bring together. Collegere is formed by combining the preposition cum (with) and ligare (to tie, bind, bind together). We get the word “ligament” from ligare.” Wyclif’s definition of college in c1380 was “Criste and his colage [i.e. the Apostles].”

Jesus's relationship with his disciples was called a college…a school.

This understanding should shift the way we think about education.

It’s not just about knowledge or subjects; it’s also about discipleship and ‘who’ is rubbing off on our kids.

If you talk to parents, they want character and wisdom just as much, if not more, than knowledge.

Thankfully, there are a lot of options for school - homeschool, public school, charter school, private school, etc

Ultimately, we pray each year for where our kids are supposed to go to school and we listen for God's voice to direct us.

But, do your homework. Meet teachers and administrators. Understand the vision and mission of the school.

Does the vision, mission and values line up with yours?

Are there solid fathers and mothers in the school?

Here is a statement that can help you…

I’m sending my kids to __________ (name of school) to learn under ___________ (person) because _______________ (your reason why...which includes what they'll learn in addition to wisdom and character).

Let's face it, raising children is messy. Your kids are going to mess up.

The question you need to ask yourself is, when my kid has a bad day and messes up, are these the people I want walking beside them helping them learn?

We hope this helps you in your school selection process. 🎯
