Why you should model and teach a pattern of hearing and doing

If you are reading this, I doubt you are one who wants to raise your kids to just be consumers, bystanders in society, imitators or destroyers.

If you are like us, we want our kids to be contributors, creators, initiators, and builders.

In order to do this, we (parents, teachers, and coaches) have to model and teach a pattern of hearing and doing.

Why model and teach? Modeling is fundamental because more is ‘caught than taught’ by parents. Our kids learn by watching us. They see how you live, work, and play.

Besides, teaching without modeling can be hypocritical. If you teach something to your kids that you don’t carry out personally, it will confuse them.

Author Seth Dahl says, “People always live out who they believe they are." To create a pattern of hearing and doing, we parents need to believe the right things about ourselves.

At times as parents, we can feel powerless. But, that is not true. You are powerful and the one God chose to parent your kid(s). You are a contributor. You set the culture for your kids. Your thoughts matter.

How do we hear and do?

‘Doing’ is self-explanatory. Just like Nike’s tagline…Just do it. However, in order to hear, we have to learn to hear the voice of God.

Have you ever asked yourself, ‘How do I know what God’s will is?’

The answer is, get to know Him. God is the architect. He designs things. He knows what you should do and how to do it. Get to know the Architect, then you'll know how to and what to build.

"If we parent our children from encounters with God, we will foster in them a lifestyle of encountering Him as well." - Seth Dahl

As you set the culture in your home and model and teach a pattern of hearing and doing, you should also look for a school that instills the same.

Education should help students know the Designer, the Architect. Education should equip students to be contributors to society, creators, initiators, and builders.

Education should equip students with certain skills in order to hit targets in life.

Key Verses:

  • Luke 6:47-49 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.

  • James 1:22-25 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

  • Matthew 7:21 Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
